L'areale originario della specie è L'Oceano Pacifico del nord, dal Giappone settentrionale, al Mare di Bering fino a Los Angeles, California, USA. Esistono popolazioni non migratrici in Alaska, nei Territori dello Yukon, nella British Columbia in Canada, e negli stati di Washington ed Oregon in USA. Introdotta con acclimatazione in Svezia, Nuova Zelanda e Cile.
