Distribuzione di M. saxatilis secondo Fishbase

 

 

L'area di distribuzione originaria comprende i bacini della costa atlantica dell'America settentrionale a est dei monti Appalachi, dal New Brunswick a sud fino alla Florida e a ovest fino alla Louisiana. La specie è stata introdotta a macchia di leopardo in tutti gli stati centrali degli USA e, più a ovest, nel fiume Colorado in Arizona ed in varie località della California. Introdotta a scopo alieutico in molti paesi di tutto il globo, ma non tutti i tentativi hanno avuto buon esito (vedere tabella seguente). In Europa orientale risulta acclimatata lungo le coste e nei bacini fluviali della regione del fiume Kuban nella Federazione Russa. In Europa occidentale è allevato l'ibrido M. saxatilis X M. chrysops, spesso impiegato nei laghi di pesca sportiva come sostituto della trota iridea durante i mesi estivi. Esemplari sono occasionalmente segnalati in acque libere, probabilmente illegalmente immessi da pescatori amatoriali.
